【英文法】強調構文の概要

今回は強調構文の概要について説明します。

強調構文とは

強調構文はit is ~ that S V ... という形を用います。

S V ...のなかで強調したい言葉（句や節もOK）を「～」に入れます。

このとき、強調できる言葉は名詞か副詞になります。

そのため、

Mary won the first prize in this competition last year.　（メアリーは昨年、このコンテストで優勝しました。）という英文は強調構文を用いると以下の４通りに書き換えることができます。

[主語Maryを強調]

It is Mary that[who] won the first prize in this competition last year.

[目的語 the first prizeを強調]

It is the first prize that[which] Mary won in this competition last year.

[副詞句in this competitionを強調]

It is in this competition that Mary won the first prize last year.

[副詞句last yearを強調]

It is last year that Mary won the first prize in this competition.

 

ここで大事なことはニュアンスの違いはありますが、意味に大きな違いはないということです。

it 、is、thatには役割がないのです。これらの単語を訳してはいけないのです！

 

it is ~ that S V .と見ると形式主語構文だと思い込んでしまう人がいますが、強調構文もこの形をとります。

しっかりと覚えておきましょう。

訳に関してはいろんな流派がありますが、もとの英文の意味が損なわなければどんな訳出でもOKです。

主語を強調する強調構文の例文

1. It is this book that changed my life forever.(私の人生を永遠に変えたのはこの本です。）
2. It is the piano that helps me express my emotions.(私が感情を表現するのを助けてくれるのはピアノです。）
3. It is the sun that gives us light and warmth.　(私たちに光と温かさを与えるのは太陽です。）
4. It is the kindness of strangers that makes the world a better place.　(見知らぬ人々の優しさが世界を良くするのです。）
5. It is this experience that taught me to never give up on my dreams.　(夢を諦めないように教えてくれたのはこの経験です。）
6. It is the language that allows us to connect with people from different cultures.　(異なる文化の人々とつながることを可能にするのは言語です。）
7. It is this teacher who inspired me to become a writer.　(私が作家になるきっかけを与えてくれたのがこの先生です。）
8. It is my mom who always supports me when I need it.　(私が必要なときにいつも支えてくれるのが母です。）

目的語を強調する強調構文の例文

1. It is my best friend who I can always count on.　(いつでも頼りにできるのが私の親友です。）
2. It is the mistake that I made that taught me a valuable lesson.　(私が犯した間違いが貴重な教訓を教えてくれました。）
3. It is this job that I love and am passionate about.　(この仕事こそ私が愛し情熱を持っています。）
4. It is this book that I want to read over and over again.　(何度も読み返したいのがこの本です。）
5. It is this movie that everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime.　(人生で一度は誰でも見るべきなのはこの映画です。）
6. It is this dish that I always order whenever I go to this restaurant.　(このレストランに行くたびにいつも注文するこの料理です。）

副詞を強調する強調構文の例文

1. It is always that I wake up early in the morning to go for a run.（私は毎日朝早く起きてランニングすることが常である）
2. It is never that I skip breakfast, as it is the most important meal of the day.（私は朝食を抜くことが決してない。それは一日の中で最も重要な食事だからだ。）
3. It is rarely that I have free time on weekends, as I am always busy with work.（私は週末に暇があることはめったにない。いつも仕事で忙しいからだ。）
4. It is sometimes that I like to take a break from technology and spend time in nature.（私は時々、テクノロジーから離れて自然の中で時間を過ごすことが好きだ。）
5. It is often that I find inspiration for my writing while taking a walk in the park.（私は公園を散歩しながら、よく書くためのインスピレーションを見つけることがよくある。）

まとめ

It is ~ that S V ...を見て、形式主語構文と決めつけるのはやめましょう。この形をみたら、強調構文の可能性もあると思えることが大切です。
